What Is Golf Solitaire?

Golf Solitaire is a single-player card game that shares its name with the sport for one reason: the goal is to achieve the lowest possible score, just like in golf. The fewer cards left in play when you finish (or the more you remove), the better your “score.”

Unlike traditional Klondike Solitaire (the version that comes with Windows), Golf Solitaire has a different layout and faster gameplay. There is no building stacks by alternating colors. There is no moving cards between columns. Instead, you focus on one simple action: removing cards from a grid by matching them to a central discard pile.

The game is known for being:

  • Fast-paced – A single round typically takes 2–5 minutes.
  • Strategic – Every move matters; one wrong choice can leave you stuck.
  • Relaxing yet challenging – It is easy to learn but difficult to master.

The developer describes it as a way to “keep your brain smart & sharp,” and that is accurate. Golf Solitaire requires planning ahead, remembering which cards remain in the deck, and sometimes making counterintuitive moves.

How to Play: Layout and Controls

The Game Layout

When you start a round of Golf Solitaire, you see:

  • A grid of cards – Usually 7 columns with 5 cards each (35 cards total), arranged face up.
  • A draw pile – Located at the bottom left. This contains the remaining cards from the deck.
  • A discard pile – Located at the bottom right. This starts with one card face up (the “starter” card).
  • Empty spaces – As you remove cards from the grid, spaces open up. However, you cannot move cards into these spaces (unlike Klondike). The grid simply becomes emptier.

Basic Controls

The instructions are simple: Tap on the bottom left deck to open a covered card. Tap on the cards in the grid to remove them.

  • On desktop: Use your mouse to click.
  • On mobile: Tap with your finger.

When you click the draw pile, you flip over the top card and place it on top of the discard pile. The old discard card remains underneath—you are building a stack.

When you click a card in the grid, the game checks if it can be removed. If it meets the rules, it disappears from the grid and becomes the new top card of the discard pile.

The Rules: What Cards Can You Remove?

This is the most important part. In Golf Solitaire, suits do not matter. Only the rank (number) of the card matters.

Rule 1: One Higher or One Lower

You can remove a card from the grid if it is exactly one rank higher or one rank lower than the top card of the discard pile.

Examples (discard pile top card is a 7):

  • You can remove a 6 or an 8 from the grid (any suit).
  • You cannot remove a 5, a 9, a Jack, etc.

Examples (discard pile top card is a King):

  • You can remove a Queen (one lower).
  • There is no card one higher than a King (unless Aces are considered high—see Rule 2).

Rule 2: Aces Are Both High and Low

Aces have special flexibility. An Ace can be treated as:

  • Low (value 1) – One lower than a 2.
  • High (value 14) – One higher than a King.

Examples:

  • If the discard pile top card is a King, you can remove an Ace (Ace as high > King).
  • If the discard pile top card is a 2, you can remove an Ace (Ace as low < 2).
  • If the discard pile top card is an Ace, you can remove a King (one lower) or a 2 (one higher).

This makes Aces extremely useful for extending your run.

Rule 3: Jokers Are Wildcards

If the game includes Jokers (some versions do), they act as wildcards. You can place any card from the grid on top of a Joker, regardless of rank.

Conversely, if a Joker is in the grid, you can only remove it if the discard pile top card is… well, technically anything, because the Joker itself is wild. Usually, the rule is: if a Joker is on top of the discard pile, the next card you play can be any rank.

Note: The specific behavior of Jokers varies slightly between implementations, but the principle is the same: they break the normal “one higher or lower” restriction.

Rule 4: Draw Pile Limitations

You can flip cards from the draw pile one at a time. Once the draw pile is empty, you cannot get new cards. You must remove all remaining grid cards using only the final discard pile top card as your reference.

If you get stuck with cards still in the grid and no moves possible, the round ends. Your score is the number of cards left in the grid (lower is better).

Winning the Game and Scoring

How to Win a Round

You win a round of Golf Solitaire by removing every card from the grid before the draw pile runs out and before you run out of legal moves.

When the grid is empty, you have achieved a “perfect round” – the best possible outcome.

Scoring System

Traditional Golf Solitaire scoring works like actual golf:

  • Each card left in the grid counts as 1 stroke (point).
  • The goal is to have the lowest score possible.

Examples:

  • Empty grid = Score of 0 (perfect game).
  • 5 cards left in grid = Score of 5.
  • All 35 cards still in grid = Score of 35 (very bad).

Some versions track your score over multiple rounds. The player with the lowest cumulative score wins.

Is There a Time Limit?

No. Golf Solitaire is turn-based. You can think about each move as long as you like. This makes it accessible for players of all ages and attention spans.

Strategies to Improve Your Game

Golf Solitaire looks simple, but good players consistently win while beginners get stuck. Here is why.

1. Always Look Ahead

Before you remove a card, think: “What cards will be available afterward?” Removing a card might open up new cards (the ones beneath it in the grid). But it might also trap cards you cannot reach.

Example: You have a 5 on top of a 4. The discard pile shows a 6. You can remove the 5 (one lower than 6). But if you remove the 5, the 4 underneath becomes available. Can you use the 4? Only if the discard pile becomes a 3 or 5 after your move. Plan the sequence.

2. Use the Draw Pile Sparingly

Do not flip a new card from the draw pile just because you can. Sometimes the grid already gives you a long chain of removable cards. Use those first. Only flip a new card when you are completely stuck.

Why? Every card you flip from the draw pile changes the discard pile top card. That change might ruin a sequence you could have played otherwise.

3. Aces Are Gold

Because Aces connect to both Kings and 2s, they are the most flexible cards. When you see an Ace in the grid, try to keep it available as long as possible. Use it to bridge between a King and a 2 when no direct move exists.

4. Clear Columns Strategically

In Golf Solitaire, the grid is arranged in columns. Removing cards from a column can expose lower cards. Sometimes you want to clear an entire column to open up the board. Other times, you want to leave a column partially filled to preserve a useful card for later.

5. Know When to Give Up

If you see that you have no legal moves and the draw pile still has cards, flip one. If that leads to another dead end, flip another. But if you flip three or four cards and still have no matches, it may be impossible to win. Restart the round instead of wasting time.

Critical: Ad Performance Requirement

To ensure ads display correctly (the game is free because of advertising), you must add a referrer URL parameter.

Correct usage:

https://html5.gamedistribution.com/5dd599b4bbb74e2b813373312dc1749a/?gd_sdk_referrer_url=https://www.yourwebsite.com/games

Replace https://www.yourwebsite.com/games with the actual URL of the page where the game appears.

Wrong usage (do not do this):

https://html5.gamedistribution.com/5dd599b4bbb74e2b813373312dc1749a/

The referrer URL tells GameDistribution where traffic originates, affecting ad targeting and revenue sharing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is Golf Solitaire really free to play?
Yes. The game is completely free. There are no in-app purchases, no premium features, and no subscriptions. The developer earns money through advertisements displayed before, during, or after rounds. You can play as many rounds as you like without paying.

2. Can I play Golf Solitaire on my phone?
Yes. The game is explicitly marked as mobile-web compatible for both iOS and Android. Open your phone’s browser (Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android), navigate to the game URL, and start playing. The touch controls work well for tapping cards.

3. What is the difference between Golf Solitaire and TriPeaks Solitaire?
They are closely related. Both use the “one higher or one lower” rule. The main difference is the layout: Golf Solitaire uses a rectangular grid (usually 7×5), while TriPeaks uses three overlapping pyramids of cards. Some players consider TriPeaks a variation of Golf.

4. How do Jokers work in Golf Solitaire?
Jokers act as wildcards. If a Joker is on top of the discard pile, you can place any card from the grid onto it. If a Joker is in the grid, you can remove it when any card is on top of the discard pile (since the Joker can match anything). However, not all versions of the game include Jokers. Check the specific implementation you are playing.

5. Is Golf Solitaire good for brain training?
Yes. The game requires working memory (remembering which cards are still in the deck), planning ahead (sequencing multiple moves), and pattern recognition (spotting chains of higher/lower cards). Regular play can help maintain cognitive function, especially in older adults. It is often recommended as a light mental exercise.

Conclusion: A Timeless Card Game for Quick Mental Breaks

Golf Solitaire proves that a good game does not need flashy graphics, complex rules, or a huge budget. All it needs is a simple, elegant mechanic and enough depth to keep players coming back.

This digital version stays true to the classic. The rules are clear. The controls are responsive. And the challenge is real—winning consistently requires genuine skill, not just luck.

Is it the most exciting game you will ever play? No. But that is not the point. Golf Solitaire is for quiet moments: waiting for a meeting to start, riding the bus, or winding down before bed. It is a game you can play for five minutes or an hour, always feeling like you are sharpening your mind.

Final verdict: If you enjoy solitaire games or want a low-stress, brain-training activity, Golf Solitaire is an excellent choice. It is free, works on any device, and offers endless replayability. Give it a try—you might just get hooked on lowering your score.
